Extremely local and endangered. Restricted to a few sites in S, E and NW England, SW Scotland and SW Ireland. Found on sandy heaths where it breeds in quite saline shallow pools; most of its coastal sites are areas of stabilised dunes. Body rather flattened with conspicuous yellow stripe down back. Gathers in pools to spawn in spring, often after heavy downpours. Most active at night when males are very vocal.
