Maier, Hermann

Austrian skier. In 2000 he became the first person to win the men's World Cup downhill, giant slalom, super G(iant slalom), and overall titles, in the same season. He repeated the feat the following year. Renowned for his powerful and fearless style, he came to international prominence in 1998, winning the giant slalom and super G gold medals at the Winter Olympic Games, and winning the giant slalom, super G, and overall World Cup titles. In 1999 he won the giant slalom and super G gold medals at the Alpine World Championships, and gained the super G World Cup title. During the 1999–2000 season he broke the Austrian record of 26 World Cup victories set by Franz Klammer, and his 53 World Cup victories puts him second on the all-time list of race wins.
