Japan: history 1869–1912

The period 1869 to 1912 is also known as the Meiji era. Following the restoration of imperial power under Emperor Mitsuhito Meiji in 1869, Japan entered a rapid period of Westernization, modernization, and industrialization. By the early years of the 20th century, Japan had become a power capable of defeating Russia.
