Nouvel, Jean

French architect. He uses the language of high-tech building in novel and highly distinctive ways. His celebrated Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 1981–87, adapts traditional Islamic motifs to technological ends: mechanized irises, for instance, control the penetration of daylight He is consistently concerned with the relationship between shadow and light.

In his design for the Nemausus building in Nîmes 1983–87, he took industrial materials and robbed them of their functional role, incorporating them into a jagged, precarious assemblage. He won France's Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1987.
