Indian cricketer who was one of the world's outstanding all-rounders. At the age of 20 he became the youngest player to complete the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in Test cricket. In 1992 he followed Richard Hadlee as the second bowler to reach 400 wickets, and by the end of his career had taken a record 434 Test wickets. In September 1999 he was appointed his country's national coach, but was forced to resign a year later after alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
