In the UK, an organization set up by the central government to coordinate rapid improvements within depressed city areas. UDCs were first introduced 1981 in the London Docklands and Merseyside. Their aims were typically: (1) to improve the local environment, making it more attractive to business; (2) to give cash grants to firms setting up or expanding within the area; (3) to renovate and reuse buildings; (4) to offer advice and practical help to firms considering moving to the location.
