Henry the Lion

Duke of Bavaria 1156–80, Duke of Saxony 1142–80, and Duke of Lüneburg 1180–85. He was granted the Duchy of Bavaria by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. He founded Lübeck and Munich. In 1162 he married Matilda, daughter of Henry II of England. His refusal in 1176 to accompany Frederick Barbarossa to Italy led in 1180 to his being deprived of the Duchies of Bavaria and Saxony. Henry led several military expeditions to conquer territory in the East.
