Eton College

Most prestigious of English public schools (that is, private schools) for boys, in Eton. It has provided the UK with 19 prime ministers and more than 20% of all government ministers between 1900 and 1998.

Eton was founded in 1440 by Henry VI as a grammar school and, after a stormy history which included a rebellion by pupils in 1783, became dominated by the sons of the aristocracy and the wealthy middle classes. Of the pupils in 1991, 40% were the sons of Old Etonians (former pupils). Prince William became a student at Eton in 1995.
