Lake Champlain is linked to the St Lawrence River via the Richelieu River, and to the Hudson River by canal; it is the fourth-largest freshwater lake in the USA.

The largest city on its shores is Burlington, Vermont. There are various islands on the lake including Grande Isle, Isle La Motte, and Valcour Island. Lake Champlain is named after explorer Samuel de Champlain, who discovered it in 1609. It was the scene of a US naval victory over the British in 1814. It is sometimes regarded as the sixth of the Great Lakes.
