Organic compound in which two atoms are linked by a double or triple covalent bond.
Alkenes, such as
ethene, are unsaturated
hydrocarbons that contain a carbon to carbon double bond.
Other examples are
ketones, where the unsaturation exists between atoms of different elements (carbon and oxygen). The laboratory test for unsaturated compounds is the addition of bromine water; if the test substance is unsaturated, the bromine water will be decolorized.
