De Savary, Peter John

English entrepreneur. He built up a large business empire in the 1980s, which then collapsed in serious debt during the economic downturn in the early 1990s, but he has since revived his fortunes through prestige hospitality property developments.

His first venture was an import-export enterprise. He then moved into the hotel business and launched the international chain of St James's Clubs in the late 1970s, which he later Skibo Castle, the former Scottish home near Inverness of US industrialist Andrew Carnegie. He also acquired John o'Groats in Scotland and Land's End in Cornwall, England, to develop as tourist attractions before having to sell them in 1991 as his business interests began to suffer.

He then concentrated on leisure property development, including country house hotels with golf courses and other amenities. His first such venture was the Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, and similar developments followed at Stapleford Park and Bovey Castle in England, and venues in South Carolina and Rhode Island in the USA. More recently, he has been developing resort and marina facilities in Grenada in the Caribbean.
