District of the inner London borough of Wandsworth, London, England; on the south bank of the Thames. It has a park (including a funfair 195174), Battersea Dogs' Home (opened 1860) for strays, and is the site of Battersea Power Station (designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1937, with an art deco interior), which closed in 1983. In August 2000, detailed planning consent for conversion of the power station to a leisure and entertainment complex was granted to developers, and work is scheduled to begin in 2001.
The development will include two hotels, two theatres, a film studio, restaurants, offices and flats, the restoration of the Grade II listed structure, and construction of a new railway station. A riverside walk will link the complex with Battersea Park. A new pier on the Thames is also planned.
