Royal family that inherited the Scottish throne in 1371 and the English throne in 1603, holding it until 1714, when Queen Anne died without heirs; the house of Stuart was succeeded by the house of
Hanover. The claimants to the British throne James Francis Edward Stuart (the Old Pretender, son of the deposed James VII of Scotland and II of England) and his son Charles Edward Stuart (the Young Pretender) both attempted unsuccessful invasions of England in support of their claims, in 1715 and 1745 (see
Jacobites).
