Chief port and capital of Sulawesi Selatan province on Sulawesi island, Indonesia; population (2000) 1,064,000. As well as fishing and food processing, industries include textiles and paper manufacture. Exports include coffee, rubber, copra, and spices. The city is home to Hasanuddin University (1956), the leading institution of higher education in eastern Indonesia.
Yellow stands for mineral wealth. Green represents the country's vegetation and natural resources. Red recalls the blood spilt during the liberation struggle. Effective date: 18 April 1980.
