Frobisher, Martin

English navigator. He made his first voyage to Guinea, West Africa, in 1554. In 1576 he set out in search of the Northwest Passage, and visited Labrador and Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island. Second and third expeditions sailed in 1577 and 1578. Knighted in 1588.

He was vice admiral in Drake's West Indian expedition in 1585. In 1588 he was knighted for helping to defeat the Armada. He was mortally wounded in 1594 fighting against the Spanish off the coast of France.

The quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, symbolizes freedom. The blue bands stand for the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The weapons represent the defence of liberty. Effective date: 15 September 1968.
