British national theatre company established in 1963, and the complex, opened in 1976, that houses it on London's South Bank. From 1988 it has been formally called the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain. Its first artistic director was Lawrence Olivier. Nicholas Hytner was artistic director from 2003.
Orange symbolizes the Sahara Desert. The orange disc represents the sun. Green recalls the country's forests. White stands for the River Niger. Effective date: 23 November 1959.
