British historian, essayist, poet, and politician, secretary of war 183941. His
History of England in five volumes (184961) celebrates the Glorious Revolution of 1688 as the crowning achievement of the Whig party. He was made a baron in 1857.
His works include an essay on Milton (1825) published in the
Edinburgh Review; a volume of verse,
Lays of Ancient Rome (1842); and the
History of England covering the years up to 1702.
