Member of the group of organic compounds containing the carbonyl group (CO) bonded to two atoms of carbon (instead of one carbon and one hydrogen as in aldehydes). Ketones are liquids or low-melting-point solids, slightly soluble in water. An example is propanone (acetone, CH3COCH3), used as a solvent.
