British field marshal in World War II. He served in the North Africa campaign 1941 then commanded the 1st Burma Corps 194245, stemming the Japanese invasion of India, and then forcing them out of Burma (now Myanmar) in 1945. He was governor general of Australia 195360. He was created a KCB in 1944 and a Viscount in 1960.
The George Cross was awarded by King George VI and originally appeared in a small blue canton. The present design dates from 1964 when the islands gained independence. Effective date: 21 September 1964.
