English general, commander-in-chief of the Parliamentary army in the English
Civil War. With Oliver
Cromwell he formed the
New Model Army and defeated Charles I at the Battle of
Naseby. He opposed the king's execution, resigned in protest against the invasion of Scotland in 1650, and participated in the restoration of Charles II after Cromwell's death. Knighted in 1640, he succeeded to the barony in 1648.
