British newspaper proprietor, born in Dublin. Founding the
Daily Mail in 1896, he revolutionized popular journalism, and with the
Daily Mirror in 1903 originated the picture paper. In 1908 he also obtained control of
The Times.
Northcliffe left school at the age of 16 and liked to be known as The Napoleon of Fleet Street. He supported the removal of Asquith as prime minister in 1916 and Lloyd George appointed him head of the British War Mission in the USA in 1917, and director of propaganda in enemy countries in 1918.
