German expressionist painter and graphic artist. Nolde studied in Paris and Dachau, joined the group of artists known as
die Brücke 190607, and visited Polynesia in 1913; he then became almost a recluse in northeastern Germany.
He painted biblical subjects marked by a barbaric intensity of colour, still lifes, and studies of the landscape of his native region on the GermanDanish border. His work includes brilliant watercolours.
