n. ancient Greek war dance; metrical foot of two short syllables; a. pertaining to such dance or foot, or to Pyrrhus, king of Epirus. Pyrrhic victory, victory like that of Pyrrhus of Epirus over Romans in 279 BC., when his army sustained tremendous losses; fruitless victory.
