McCain in Obama baseball jibe

Date: 25/10/2008 19:43

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama will say almost anything to get elected, his rival John McCain claimed.

As an example, he said, Mr Obama managed to switch loyalties between teams in two key swing states competing in the World Series baseball tournament finals.

The games grip America like no other sport, and the current finals are between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, in the vital states of Pennsylvania and Florida.

"I'm not dumb enough to get mixed up in a World Series between swing states, but I think I may have detected a little pattern with Senator Obama," Mr McCain said.

Speaking in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, a state where Mr Obama has a commanding 11-point lead in the latest average of polls by RealClearPolitics.com, Mr McCain claimed his rival supported the Tampa Bay Rays when he was in Tampa Bay, Florida, and the Phillies when he was in Pennsylvania.

"It's pretty simple really," Mr McCain said.

"When he's campaigning in Philadelphia, he roots for the Phillies, and when he's campaigning in Tampa Bay, he shows love to the Rays."

As a chorus of boos built, the 72-year-old Arizona senator smiled and went on: "It's kind of like the way he campaigns on tax cuts, but then votes for tax increases after he's elected.

"Or the way he says he backs the middle class and then goes and attacks Joe the Plumber after Senator Obama's asked a tough question. What's that all about?"

In fact, Mr Obama did not attack Joe the Plumber, but he did criticise Mr McCain for suggesting that the Ohio plumber, who wants to purchase the plumbing business where he works, was in the same economic shape as most working class voters in America.

Mr McCain's handling of his own supporters in Pennsylvania also highlighted a stark contrast between his campaign and that of Mr Obama.

While Mr McCain smiled and went on with his speech as his supporters booed Mr Obama, the Democrat immediately rebuked his own supporters in Florida when they booed Mr McCain.
