Gordon Brown has personally congratulated US president-elect Barack Obama on his historic victory in a phone call.
The men also discussed key issues including the reform of the global financial system, according to Downing Street.
It is understood that Mr Brown and Mr Obama had a "very friendly and positive" 10-minute conversation, covering topics including the world economy, the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Middle East peace process.
Number 10 said Mr Brown had also spoken to current US President George Bush, as well as Australian PM Kevin Rudd.
