South Africa captain Graeme Smith is expected to be back in England in time for the second Test after flying home to attend the birth of his first child.

Smith cut short his team's first-Test victory celebrations to be with his Irish wife Morgan after she went into labour.

On Wednesday he announced the news of the birth on his Twitter account, saying: "Our daughter, Cadence Christine Smith, was born this morning, 3,35kg mother and daughter doing well. thx for all kind wishes that was amazing?"

Smith flew home on Monday, missing the Proteas' two-day match against Worcestershire, but Cricket South Africa indicated that he will return in time for the start of their preparations for the Headingley match on Monday.

The second Test starts next Thursday.
