The Bank Holiday weekend should end with a fairly dry day for most of Britain, forecasters said.

After a mixed day including sunshine, cool breezes and showers, Monday promises to predominately rain-free.

But people may have to wait until the middle of the week for a real taste of summer when temperatures are set to rise into the mid-20s.

Matt Dobson, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There is going to be quite a bit of dry and sunny weather across central and southern England tomorrow (Monday) although there will be cloud extending from north-east England, East Anglia and Kent.

"This will move westwards during the day and might produce the odd light shower in Lincolnshire, East Anglia and possibly London.

"But there will be plenty of dry weather.

"It should be a much brighter day across Cornwall than today when it was quite dull and damp but there will be some rain again by the evening."

Scotland will be sunny, he said, while the warmest temperatures are likely to be in the West Midlands, south Wales and north-west England which could reach 20C away from the onshore breeze affecting eastern areas.

Sunday saw highs of 20C in London, while southern areas experienced temperatures of between 14C and 19C compared with 12C-16C in the north.

Mr Dobson added: "If people want a glimmer of hope, from Wednesday onwards there is some really nice weather on the way." Temperatures are predicted to be 23C in the London area, rising to 25C by the end of the week while southern and eastern England and Wales should see the mercury rise to the mid-20s.
