Unions 'to set rail strike dates'

Network Rail is expecting unions to set strike dates despite continuing peace talks aimed at resolving rows over jobs and working practices.

Negotiations over the firm's plans to cut 1,500 maintenance jobs were held this week at the conciliation service Acas.

But talks between NR, the Rail Maritime and Transport union and Transport Salaried Staffs Association adjourned without agreement.

A Network Rail spokesman said that the talks had yielded "progress".

He added: "Network Rail is committed to pursuing a negotiated settlement - our door is always open to further discussions."

But the firm expects strike dates to be announced, with the threat of travel disruption over the Easter period. The NR spokesman said: "Network Rail will do everything it can to run trains to minimise disruption to passengers. Our contingency plans are at an advanced stage."

An RMT spokesman said the union was committed to resuming talks in a bid to resolve the dispute, adding that NR was being premature in warning that strikes would be set.

The RMT executive will meet after the talks to decide the union's next move.
