Police trying to trace the mother of a newborn baby found dead behind a convenience store have released photos of the clothes he was wearing and towels in which he was wrapped.

Gwent Police hope the move will encourage the mother or someone who knows her to come forward.

The photographs show a blue and white striped long-sleeved top, a white Dunelm towel with a gingerbread man and heart design on it, and an orange beach towel manufactured by Arencibia, an outlet based on Gran Canaria.

Police said they also found an orange vest top from George in a size 14.

The abandoned baby was found behind the Spar shop on Newport Road, Cwmcarn, on Thursday evening and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Shopkeeper Gursewak Singh, 39, said he saw a Next carrier bag near the back of his shop on Thursday, but thought it was gym kit belonging to one of the patrons of the nearby boxing club.

He said: "We use that back door quite a lot and we saw a Next store bag outside.

"We asked friends and colleagues what the bag was doing there, but it didn't belong to anyone. A boy who works with us said it was just a towel in there and he didn't open it. We thought it belonged to someone from the boxing club next door, so we just left it thinking someone would come and get it."

He added: "In the evening I went out to it and opened it, only saw a towel on top and didn't look thoroughly. I just thought it was clothes underneath and didn't want to root through them. I picked it up and hanged it on the gatepost so someone walking by might see it and recognise it as theirs.

"At about six o'clock there was a power cut and my 14-year-old son went out and picked up the bag and opened it and saw a little head in there. He called his uncle and said: 'It's not clothes come and look'. They came over and saw the baby in there."
