Families heading off on the half-term getaway have been warned to take extra care on the roads as freezing temperatures create hazardous driving conditions.

On Thursday, up to 25cm (10in) of snow fell in parts of Kent and East Sussex - and more wintry showers are forecast.

A mix of snow, sleet and rain is expected across eastern England with temperatures hovering close to or below 0C overnight.

Motorists were told to take extra care on slippery roads as the Met Office warned of widespread ice in eastern England.

The AA warned main routes were likely to be busier than usual as many schools break up for half-term.

"There will be a lot of people on long journeys and there will be an earlier than usual rush hour today," a spokesman said.

"People will notice the roads will be busier than usual. We know a lot of councils are still low on grit and salt so people need to be aware of slippery conditions."

John Hutchinson, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the cold spell was likely to remain for the next week.

But he said there was unlikely to be a repeat of the heavy snow that hit parts of the south east of England this week.

Key roads in Kent and East Sussex, including the M20, A28 and A2 in Kent and the A259 between Eastbourne and Bexhill, were treacherous for drivers on Thursday following the snowfall.
