MPs and peers who have had their expenses claims investigated by the police are to learn whether they will face criminal charges.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will announce its verdict on several cases that have been referred by the Metropolitan Police.

Files on six parliamentarians accused of the worst excesses in the second homes expenses scandal were passed to prosecutors in November and December.

Although they have not been officially unnamed, it is known that Scotland Yard investigated Labour MPs David Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Jim Devine.

From the House of Lords, Labour's Baroness Uddin and Lord Clarke of Hampstead, as well as Tory peer Lord Hanningfield, have also been probed.

The announcements by the CPS follow a damning verdict on MPs' expenses by Sir Thomas Legg, who conducted an audit of all claims made in recent years.

Hundreds of MPs were ordered to repay £1.12 million.

Sir Thomas, a former mandarin, lambasted the "deeply flawed" system at Westminster, saying even the "vague" rules that existed had not been enforced.

However, the taxpayer still faced a net loss because the bill for the Legg review was £1.16 million.
