Troubled chart star Pete Doherty said he was "shocked and saddened" after learning of the death of a friend - from the wealthy Goldsmith dynasty - from a suspected drug overdose.

Robin Whitehead, 27, granddaughter of the late Teddy Goldsmith, founder of The Ecologist magazine, was found dead in a flat in Hackney, east London, on Sunday night after paramedics answered a 999 call.

It is understood drug paraphernalia were found at the flat, which was reported to have been rented by one of Doherty's friends.

Filmmaker Miss Whitehead, who is also the great-niece of late billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith, had recently been part of Doherty's circle as she worked on a documentary about the musician.

Doherty, who fronts chart act Babyshambles and is a former member of The Libertines, passed on condolences to her family.

A spokeswoman said: "Peter Doherty was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Robin Whitehead. Peter wishes to convey his condolences to Robin's family and her close friends at this very difficult time."

Her mother, Dido Whitehead, is a cousin of Jemima Khan and Zac Goldsmith, and her father is 1960s filmmaker Peter Whitehead.

In a statement, her parents said: "Robin had an exceptional capacity for compassion and for love, both to her family and close friends and to all those whom she touched. This was reflected in the depths and passion of her art.

"To lose her so young and so far before her life's work was done is heartbreaking. We would now ask that the media respects our privacy while we try to come to terms with our bereavement."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A post-mortem will be carried out in due course. Her death is not being treated as suspicious."
