A fresh bout of wintry weather is expected to hit parts of Britain early on Wednesday, but forecasters said it would not herald a return to the freezing conditions of the recent cold spell.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said snow is expected to fall over the Welsh hills during the early hours, with accumulations of 5-10cm (2-4in) by the afternoon.

Areas of central southern England could see falls of up to an inch, again mostly on higher ground, while wintry showers and sleet could stretch into the South East, he added.

The snow is being caused by cold air from the continent meeting a frontal system coming in from the Atlantic.

However affected areas will not shiver in the sub-zero temperatures which marked the cold spell.

"It will be a fairly cold day, but we should see maximum temperatures such as 37F (3C) or 41F (5C)," Mr Tobler said.

The wintry weather is expected to move away from Wednesday evening, however another front will come in from the Atlantic on Thursday evening, bringing wind and heavy rain, and sleet over the hills.

The UK was hit by some of the heaviest snowfall for decades during a bout of freezing weather two weeks ago, causing days of severe transport and school disruption across the country.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis briefed the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet on the preparations for another possible bout of snowy weather, and ministers were told the Government remains "vigilant" and that stocks of salt for gritting are rising after being depleted during the earlier cold spell.

The first supplies of gritting salt ordered from the US and Spain are due to arrive in the UK tomorrow, and the relaxation of lorry drivers' permitted working hours introduced to keep supplies flowing earlier in the month has been extended for a further seven days.
