Store chain Asda is offering the cheapest trolley of festive goods this year, according to a survey.

The retailer's £102.08 trolley of 33 items, which included turkey, Christmas pudding, Champagne, batteries, crackers and cards, undercut the average price of the "big five" by £10.29, research by The Grocer magazine found.

Tesco came in second with a trolley price of £105.30, while Morrisons, victorious last year, fell two places to third with a £107.51 total and Sainsbury's followed with £114.57.

Waitrose emerged as the most expensive of the five with a basket costing £132.29.

Grocer editor Adam Leyland said: "Amid fierce competition between all the big supermarkets, there are a record number of promotions on shelf, with more than 2,000 on booze alone.

"But with the most expensive shopping basket over £30 pricier than the cheapest, there's definitely scope for savings for shoppers looking for a frugal Christmas."

Darren Blackhurst, Asda's chief merchandising officer, celebrated the win, saying: "We're pleased The Grocer has confirmed what our customers already know - their big Christmas shop will cost less at Asda."

Asda offered 26 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items, including the whole frozen turkey at £13, Nestle Quality Street at £3 and the Christmas pudding and Mr Kipling mince pies at £1, the Grocer said.

Tesco was helped to second place with its bargain alcohol, the magazine added.

At £13.98, its champagne undercut its rivals', as did its Famous Grouse whisky, at £10.
