Effort to cut teenage pregnancies

A new campaign encouraging young people to talk more openly about sex and contraception has been launched.

The "Contraception. Worth Talking About" scheme is aimed at cutting the UK's teen pregnancy rate - currently the highest in Europe.

It comes after research among 16 to 24-year-olds which showed a lack of knowledge coupled with poor attitudes and communication was hindering safer sexual behaviour.

The study found more than a quarter (26%) never discussed contraception with their partner, and one in five felt awkward discussing contraception with friends.

Nearly half of younger women (44%) were also unaware they might not be using contraception that was the best "fit" for their age and lifestyle. The campaign aims to prompt conversations about the range of contraceptives available - through snippets of everyday conversations such as in a shopping centre, or in front of the television.

Figures earlier this year showed the Government's target of halving teenage pregnancy rates by 2010 is unlikely to be met. The data showed there were 41.9 conceptions per 1,000 15 to 17-year-olds in 2007 - up from 40.9 the year before.

Gillan Merron, Public Health Minister, said: "Sex still seems to be taboo - too many of us are holding back from having the open and honest conversations that young people need to make informed decisions, including about when it's right to have sex.

"There is a method of contraception to suit the lifestyle of everyone, and it's right to talk about these options."

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo added: "We want to help young people to talk to their family and friends without feeling uncomfortable, so that they can improve their knowledge and understanding about sexual health and feel more confident to make the choices that are right for them."
