Setback for alcohol pricing plans

Controversial plans to bring in minimum pricing for alcohol appeared doomed after Labour politicians in Scotland said they would oppose the move.

Doctors and alcohol campaigners have backed the move, which was set out in the Scottish Government's Alcohol Bill.

But Labour have now rejected the plan and denounced it as "hugely flawed".

The party said it would set up its own commission to study alcohol pricing.

The Liberal Democrats and the Tories have already said they opposed the proposals for minimum pricing.

If passed, the SNP proposals would give ministers the power to set a minimum price per unit for alcohol, although this figure has yet to be determined.

Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray told the BBC: "We certainly accept that Scotland has a very serious problem with alcohol.

"But the problem is that the proposal for minimum unit pricing that the SNP have brought forward is hugely flawed.

"We are not convinced it would work."

Mr Gray went on: "For a year now we have been trying to get answers to some key questions about the SNP proposal and those have not been forthcoming."
