Stephen Gately's grieving family is working to get the body of the Boyzone star home "as quickly as possible," after tests showed he had died of natural causes.

While his devastated partner Andrew Cowles visited the singer's body to pay his respects on Tuesday night, his family announced the funeral would take place this weekend.

The Irish singer was found dead last Saturday on the sofa in his apartment in Port Andratx, Majorca, after a night out with Mr Cowles.

A judge agreed on Tuesday that his body could be returned home to Ireland after a post-mortem examination found the singer had suffered a pulmonary oedema, an accumulation of fluid on the lungs. Further tests are being carried out on the fluid to confirm the result.

Lawyer Gerald Kean, a spokesman for Gately's family in Ireland, said: "The family are pleased that the post-mortem has been completed.

"They are pleased that the results of the post-mortem vindicate exactly what they said all along, that Stephen died as a result of natural causes.

"They would like to thank the authorities in Spain and Ireland for doing everything in their power to complete formalities as quickly as possible to get Stephen's body home."

Mr Kean said the family was planning a funeral to take place at noon on Saturday at St Laurence O'Toole's Church, Dublin.

It is thought Gately's body could be flown on Friday for a private wake at his family home.

Gately's Boyzone bandmates - Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch, who made a flying visit to Majorca after the death - are expected to return to the island but it is unclear when.
