Murder suspect Amanda Knox is due to defend herself against charges of sexually assaulting and killing British student Meredith Kercher.

Knox, 21, from Seattle, will take the stand in a courtroom in Perugia, Italy, where she is on trial alongside her Italian former lover Raffaele Sollecito.

Miss Kercher, 21, from Coulsdon in Surrey, was found dead in her bedroom on November 2, 2007 in the cottage she shared with Knox and others on her year abroad in the Umbrian town.

Her throat had been slit and her semi-naked body was partially covered by a duvet.

Prosecutors accuse Knox and 25-year-old Sollecito of killing the Leeds University student after she refused to take part in a sex game.

Knox's father Kurt told US television network CBS's Early Show: "(Amanda's) a bit nervous about going on to the stand, but she's also quite confident in what she has to say and that the truth will come out during her testimony.

"She is going to be telling the truth and answering all of the questions. Hopefully the court will see that and see that she had nothing to do with this and that she's 100% innocent."

He added that his daughter would speak Italian during her testimony. She has learned the language mainly during the year-and-a-half she has spent in jail in Perugia.

Francesco Maresca, the lawyer representing the Kercher family in its civil case against Knox, predicted she would face a difficult cross-examination.

The Kercher family is seeking about £20 million in damages in a case which runs alongside the trial.
