The family of murdered student Meredith Kercher have arrived in court in Italy to give evidence against the couple accused of killing her.

Her parents John and Arline Kercher entered the court in Perugia without commenting.

Meredith's sister Stephanie said only she felt "anxious", ahead of the hearing.

Miss Kercher, 21, from Coulsdon, Surrey, was found dead in her bedroom on November 2 2007, in the house in the town she shared with Amanda Knox and others on her year abroad.

Her throat had been slit and her semi-naked body was partially covered by a duvet.

Knox, 21, from Seattle, and Italian-born Raffaele Sollecito, 25, are accused of killing the Leeds University student after she refused to take part in a sex game.

The Kerchers, who flew into Perugia, will relate the last phone conversations they had with their daughter before her death. Miss Kercher's parents are expected to tell jurors about the life their daughter - known as Mez - led as a student in the Umbrian hilltop town.

The two defendants appeared nervous as they arrived for the hearing.

Knox, dressed in white trousers and a white patterned top, with her hair tied back in a pony tail, chatted with her legal team as she waited for the hearing to get under way. Sollecito, wearing a deep red shirt, looked anxious, sometimes biting his nails.

The first evidence was presented behind closed doors as graphic images of the killing were shown to the court. The hearing has been adjourned.
