The junior Home Office official involved in the Whitehall leaks inquiry has said that he only passed four documents to a Tory frontbencher.

Christopher Galley, who on Thursday was told he would not face criminal charges, had been accused of involvement in 20 leaks from the Home Office over a two-year period.

After a five-month inquiry, the CPS announced that both Mr Galley and Tory immigration spokesman Damian Green would not face charges over the leaks.

The Home Office's senior civil servant Sir David Normington said in January that a string of 20 leaks from the department had left him "completely frustrated".

He told the Home Affairs Select Committee whoever was leaking the material was "despicable and disloyal".

Mr Galley told Sky News: "I passed him (Mr Green) four documents - I've been accused of leaking 20 documents in total and I only leaked four.

"The police pressured me on numerous occasions to reveal more leaks than I did and I categorically stated that I only leaked four documents."

He added: "They can describe it as despicable and disloyal but I actually think the leaks were in the public interest and the public actually need to know how the Home Office was behaving at that time."

Mr Galley said he faced a disciplinary hearing within the next two weeks but he expected to be sacked.

He said he was "open to any offers" for jobs in politics or public affairs.
