smart fortwo cdi emissions drop to 86 g/km CO2

19/02/2010 11:03

The diesel smart fortwo cdi now emits just 86 g/km of CO2, with fuel consumption of 85.6 mpg.

This is slightly down on the previous emissions of 88 g/km (with economy improved from 83.1 mpg) and smart is making the most of this being the lowest figure worldwide for cars with a combustion engine.

Improved aerodynamics are a factor in the lower emissions, including a reduction in ride height, even though this is only by seven millimetres.

The smart cdi first went on sale in the UK in March 2009 in both coupé and cabrio versions. The fortwo still comes with the five-speed semi-automatic transmission offering both fully automatic and manual modes.

The smart cdi achieved 96.8 mpg in last year's MPG Marathon.

If after all that you prefer petrol power rather than the 45bhp three-cylinder common-rail diesel engine, then you can still go for the smart mhd (micro hybrid drive), which offers fuel savings of up to 24% in stop-start situations.
