Elizabeth's uncle, King George VIII caused a worldwide scandal when he started a relationship with a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson.In 1930s England divorce was still frowned upon and it was unthinkable that a King of England could marry a divorced woman.
Edward abdicated on 11 December 1936, after being King for less than a year.
On the 12th May 1937, Princess Elizabeth's life was changed forever when her father was crowned King George VI.
