This week's big singles

2002-10-08

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me (pictured)

Taken from her wonderful debut album of the same name, this is another slice of float-around-on-a-beach piano jazz.

As one of the stand-out tracks from the album, this song brilliantly showcases Norah Jones hauntingly beautiful vocals, which swing from whisperingly sensitive to rousingly defined and strong.

The subject matter? A simple and direct call for a lover to run away with her.

This record calms the ear and soothes the heart, complete with suitably shuffly drums and the most laid-back guitar you'll hear all autumn.

Who cares if this is classic Radio 2 territory?

They have the biggest listenership in the UK at the moment, and you can see why when Come Away With Me is placed high on the playlist.

  • The Coral - Dreaming Of You

It's been a busy summer. Since the release of their last single, The Coral have conquered the festival circuit, slain Top Of The Pops and adorned the NME front cover and, of course, 'met a few aliens along the way'.

All in a month's work, really.

Taken from their Panasonic Mercury Music Prize nominated and top-five bothering debut album, stand-out moment Dreaming Of You is currently blaring out of most households' wireless'.

With more hooks than a Peter Pan costume party and harmonies layered like Mississippi Mud Pie, this is The Coral purifying their rich syrup of ideas through the filter of keen melody rather than hurling it gaily from your stereo.

    Unsurprisingly, it's a winner.

Spread over a two-CD set, Dreaming Of You comes backed with four new bijous of musical plundering in order for continued chart eligibility.

CD1 features classic live favourite Follow The Sun - the one that guitarist Lee penned and sings on and Answer Me.

CD2 comes with more recent live favourite Sweet Sue and equally sweet acoustic lament Another Turn In The Lock.

The boys undertake a hardcore UK tour in October, supported by various mates, labelmates and like minded band-folk throughout the country (including the Hokum Clones and The Zutons). Just check out this for work ethic...

  • Richard Ashcroft - Check The Meaning

The long-awaited new single from former Verve front man Richard Ashcroft represents a stunning return to the heyday sound of his former band.

The first taster of the singer-songwriter's forthcoming album, 'Check The Meaning' is a self-assured, uplifting rock return from one of the biggest talents the UK's produced over the last ten years.

Melancholic, evocative yet always inspirational, it's a soaring string-powered epic that cements Ashcroft's rock credentials in stone.

All formats of this release include bonus tracks with the DVD adding video extras.
