The Libertines' 'Can't Stand Me Now' single - Tiscali Music Reviews

09/08/2004

Single release date: 9th August 2004

The first track to be lifted from The Libertines hugely anticipated self-titled second album is another exhilarating slice of shambolic indie that describes the tumultuous relationship between band leaders Pete Doherty and Carl Barat.

The telling lyric: "You can't stand me now/but have we enough to keep it together/or do we just go on pretending/and hope our luck is never ending" highlights the uneasy alliance that makes the Libs the subject of so much gossip and rumour. A perfect re-introduction from one of the best young bands around, 'Can't Stand Me Now' has 'anthem' written all over it.

"It takes a truly great band to be so good at pop that they make pop look bad, and The Libertines do" NME Single Of The Week
