Shingai's festival survival guide

The Noisettes’ frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa is a seasoned professional when it comes to festivals. Whether it’s performing on stage at Glastonbury, or getting down with the crowd at the Secret Garden Party, she always has fun and looks as cool and quirky as ever.
This summer the band are playing Lovebox, the Cornbury Festival, Vintage Goodwood and Lake of Stars.
Speaking at the Russian Standard Vodka Originals gig in Edinburgh, Shingai revealed her top tips for enjoying festival season.
:: Find a rendez-vous point
“Always have a plan B contingency plan for finding your friends, because everyone says ‘I can text them, I can phone them, blah blah blah’ but the reality of going to a festival is that you’re surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people who are also wanting to use their phones.
“So have a dusty old oak tree where you can all meet if the worst comes to the worst. So at least if your day was spent alone or running around with crazy strangers, at least you can have a ‘meet me here at midnight spot’.”
:: Go easy on the make-up
“Chances are you’re going to be quite hot and sweaty, so rather than taking your whole make-up bag and lots of foundation, opt for a loose powder or a pressed powder and avoid foundation at all costs, it goes everywhere and you’re going to look like a cake when a child has picked off all the icing to get to the sponge. So just stay matte, and take a fun lip colour and a compact with mirror and you’ll be fine.
“And always bring a bit of glitter as when the sun goes down on a festival you never know what you might be compelled to do with that glitter. Boys seem to love glitter at festivals.”
:: Plan what you’d like to do, then forget about it
“I’m a Virgo so I’m really into planning. But bear in mind everyone’s going to want to have a good time so there’s no point in getting all ’sergeant major’ on people because they’ll just abandon you.”
:: Oust the tall people
“I think short people should unite and form a huge fence and run around the tall people until they fall to the floor, and then rush and get to the front so the tall people do what they’re supposed to do and stand at the back so the short people can see.”
:: Keep hydrated
“Even when you’re feeling like you want a big night, drink lots of water as it will make you feel not so hungover the next day. If you’re going to drink champagne, don’t drink cider and beer all day then drink warm champagne at night. That’s pointless.
“Get there, celebrate, drink what’s cold and then have a tiny bottle of spirits and share it with everyone. A quarter bottle of rum is a good idea because mixers are cheap to buy but alcohol isn’t.
:: Try out festivals abroad
“I like a lot of the smaller boutique festivals such as Secret Garden Party – amazing – Standon Calling, Bestival obviously is brilliant, and there are a lot more festivals around the world that are sometimes cheaper or the same amount of money as going to one here, like Sonar in Barcelona. We’re playing Lake of Stars in Malawi this year too.”
:: Enjoy the moment
“My festival highlight was watching our keyboard player watch Bruce Springsteen. He is such a fan of Bruce Springsteen, he’s loved him since he was a kid, and we got to watch him play.
“We did a festival called Lowland two summers ago and Springsteen was headlining and we all managed to sneak backstage past security and our keyboard player started crying because he was so happy to see him play. It’s always nice to go with people who love the music.”
