Review
Suzuki's big Bandit has long been all things to all riders, but this latest version is a real leap forward for the ever-popular sports tourer.
First up, there's a new larger capacity 1255cc engine with fuel injection to help it meet modern European emissions targets. This fresh motor delivers an impressive 80lb ft torque, giving the big Bandit loads of grunt from 3500rpm all the way through the revs, offering easy and smooth surges of thrust. There are no nasty lumps or injection stutters in the power delivery either, and the gearbox is perfectly suited to the character of the engine, making this Suzuki fuss-free and fast once you wind it up. It'll top 140mph with ease.
Although it uses the same chassis as before, Suzuki has beefed up the frame rails and overhauled this Bandit's springs and dampers, so it's a much sharper handling motorcycle that's more capable on a twisty road than its predecessor.
But the Suzuki Bandit's signature talents haven't been forgotten either. This is an ideal multi-purpose bike that could be used for weekend blasts, as a workhorse or even for high mileage touring. And if you opt for the GT pack, you get a full set of panniers and extra wind protection, resulting in a £6k bike that puts 'proper' £10k tourers to shame. Even without the GT pack, the Bandit's easy upright riding position means most riders will be comfortable, and the standard S model comes with a half-fairing for extra wind protection.
So the Bandit 1200 is multi-talented, but it isn't as electrifying or as fun as weekend thrill seekers might desire. For everyday riders though - those who want a blend of everything from their bike - there's very little that can touch it. And with prices starting at around £5,500, it's an absolute bargain too.
