I have a Peugeot 206 2.0 litre HDi (year 2000). The fuel gauge is reading full all the time, even when the tank is empty. The garage says that the problem lies with the sender unit in the tank, and that the sender is in unit with the fuel pump. I was wondering if there is any way this unit can be taken apart and refurbished, or if there is a known fault that can be fixed? It would seem to me that as the car is 10 years old there might be some corrosion, perhaps caused by contact with the fuel. Thanks in advance.
The mechanic says...
This is a common problem on the 206 (and other Peugeot models). It is worth trying to disconnect and clean the external electrical connections to the sender, as these can suffer from dirt/corrosion; this may correct matters, at least in the short term. Check the condition of the wiring too, in case this is faulty. However, if these attentions don’t work, or if the trouble quickly returns, unfortunately it is likely that the sender unit/fuel pump assembly will need to be renewed. Having said that, before having the sender unit/pump renewed, it would be wise to have the system checked by a competent auto-electrician to confirm the precise cause of the trouble, if cleaning the connections and checking the wiring doesn’t result in an improvement.
