Noisy Mazda?

I drive an ‘08’ registered Mazda2 1.4D. I have recently noticed that the engine noise at idle seems to be louder than it was before. Do you think it's my hearing, or could there be a mechanical explanation?! Normally the car is driven carefully, but a few weeks back I had to drive about 2.5 hours in a real hurry and pushed the car pretty hard (always below the red line though). Is that likely to have done any damage or am I just worrying? Many thanks for your help.

It is difficult to answer in a definitive manner without hearing the engine. However, it is very unlikely that your ‘drive in a hurry’ has done any damage, especially if the engine revs were kept below the tachometer’s ‘red line’ level. However, if the engine seems to sound noisy, check first that it has sufficient oil (ideally check the oil level before every long run too – the level should be up to the ‘full’ mark on the dipstick), and make sure that all ancillary components are securely attached (looseness can cause vibrations and noise).

Assuming that all is well in these departments, it might be worth asking for a second opinion at a reputable garage. It is just possible that a mechanical malfunction has occurred, in which case the engine may be noisy, for example emitting a rattle (due to a component breakage), or a roar, or a ‘chuffing’ noise (possibly because of a loose or damaged exhaust system).
