Approximately how long does it take to change a cam belt on a 1.6 Ford Mondeo 2000, and how much would it cost to have one changed by professionals?
The mechanic says...
The time required can vary a little according to who is doing the work; it’s not an easy do-it-yourself operation. If you are proposing to tackle the work yourself, expect the job to take a little longer, the first time you undertake it.
To have the work carried out by a competent mechanic, it would be expected to take approximately two hours or so.
Ensure that a complete high quality belt kit is fitted (including tensioners), to be sure that the belt and tensioners will not subsequently give trouble/break (potentially wrecking the engine). Note that if the belt breaks and the valves collide with the pistons, repairs will be very expensive…
As a rough guide, but depending on the garage or mechanic doing the job, the total bill, including parts and labour, would probably be approximately £150 if the work is done by an independent operator, or perhaps £300 to £350+ if it is carried out by a main dealer. It would be wise to ask for a specific quote from more than one mechanic/garage, before having the work carried out.
