The Land Cruiser has earned its place on this list through its durability and off-road performance. The latest three- and five-door versions, launched in 2003, are designed to rival the BMW X5. Like the Nissan Patrol, it's an accomplished off-roader but the Land Cruiser struggles when you hit the tarmac.
The 3.0 D-4D diesel unit is refined and torquey, but if it's more power you're after, the powerful 4.0-litre petrol unit will do the job. Although it's not actually that big, it could never be called nimble with light steering and wallowy suspension.
